Mountain climbing is an extreme sport that requires great physical strength. This means you should see a doctor to make sure you are healthy enough to participate. This will decrease the possibility of having health problems while you train and engage in the sport. You also need to learn your strengths and weaknesses so that you can set goals and develop at an appropriate rate.
If you want to be good at mountain climbing, you will have to do regular exercise to keep your muscles toned and healthy. All of this work doesn’t have to be done in a gym either. You can spend your time playing sports and doing routine things like walking up and down the stairs instead of taking an elevator. It will be impossible to climb successfully if you do not work on your upper body strength especially. You’ll also need to learn how to breathe properly to avoid getting tired quickly. Be sure to engage all of the muscles in your body so you have an overall level of tone and fitness. Don’t forget the push-ups, crunches, and flexes of the knees.
In addition to exercise, you will need to practice the skill of climbing. This can be done at indoor rock walls. Although different than climbing a real mountain, this provides a good training opportunity because it improves your grip and problem solving skills. You will also be given advice from the person that is handling your harness. One great advantage to training on an indoor rock climbing wall is that you will be supervised and be able to meet people who share your same interests.
You’ll also need to get the right gear to participate in mountain climbing. You’ll need a helmet, harness and seat, rope, special shoes, and spikes for climbing particularly steep areas. All of this equipment can be purchased online or at specialty stores. Make sure that everything is UIAA approved.
