Extreme sports are sometimes not the domain of the elderly. It requires a lot of physical conditions that might not suit elderly people. Dangerous sports are attracting well-settled elderly people who feel this is one of the things they need to do before they die. The irony is that these sports are actually causing the elderly death.
What may be the reasons? Elderly people often take time to recover from injuries. This could prove fatal. Some elderly people may already have some health conditions, and an injury only aggravates this condition.
Most injuries are caused in extreme sporting activity such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and sky diving, and skiing. It is still not clear why elderly people choose extreme sports. While some say that they are drawn to it for love, some people are of the opinion that the elderly want to regain their lost youthfulness through such sport.
It must be said that extreme sports needs physical fitness levels that are different from other sporting activity. Extreme sports always have the danger factor associated with them. This is because they are performed in uncontrolled or low-controlled external environments.
The U.S. Parachute Association (USPA) has reported a sharp increase in membership. A sizeable chunk of the membership applications are from elderly people. The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association’s (SGMA) is also becoming popular with retirees who want to enroll in their rock climbing programs.
Nothing is impossible. But everything requires method. Extreme sports organizations need to have a screening process before they enroll people. This could solve problems associated with injury to elderly people who do extreme sports.
